چکیده

Introduction: Fast and accurate segmentation of thalamic nuclei is important for clinical applications such as treatment of Parkinson's disease or chronic pain syndrome for example. The intrinsic contrast in standard anatomical MR images in the thalamus is very low, therefore direct segmentation of thalamic nuclei is not possible. Since thalamic nuclei have a distinct and well-ordered fiber structure, DTI promises better contrast within the thalamus. Several methods for the segmentation of thalamic nuclei on DTI data have been proposed (see for example [1-2]). Even though these methods show impressive results they require manual segmentation of the whole thalamus or other brain regions, finetuned segmentation parameters and their computation time is in some cases [2] very high. We therefore refine a segmentation method based on local Dominant Diffusion Orientation (DDO) classification that is fast and independent of manual segmentation [3]. Using a group of 63 healthy subjects, we show the anatomical relevance of our DDO-based segmentation method. To prove that the segmented nuclei in individual subject data correspond well to each other we evaluate the spread of the center-of-mass (COM) coordinates for the individual subjects and clusters. Methods: Data: DTI data and T1 weighted images were acquired for 63 healthy right-handed volunteers (32 male and 31 female) between 20 and 40 years old (mean 26.29 years +/4.48; females: mean 25.52 years +/4.35) on a 1.5T MR-

Functional-anatomical validation and individual variation of diffusion tractography-based segmentation of the human thalamus.

Parcellation of the human thalamus based on cortical connectivity information inferred from non-invasive diffusion-weighted images identifies sub-regions that we have proposed correspond to nuclei. Here we test the functional and anatomical validity of this proposal by comparing data from diffusion tractography, cytoarchitecture and functional imaging. We acquired diffusion imaging data in elev...

Cluster-Based Image Segmentation Using Fuzzy Markov Random Field

Image segmentation is an important task in image processing and computer vision which attract many researchers attention. There are a couple of information sets pixels in an image: statistical and structural information which refer to the feature value of pixel data and local correlation of pixel data, respectively. Markov random field (MRF) is a tool for modeling statistical and structural inf...

Thalamus segmentation based on the local diffusion direction: a group study.

Fast and accurate segmentation of deep gray matter regions in the brain is important for clinical applications such as surgical planning for the placement of deep brain stimulation implants. Mapping anatomy from stereotactic atlases to patient data is problematic because of individual differences in subject anatomy that are not accounted for by commonly used atlases. We present a segmentation m...

Role of μ-opioid receptor in parafascicular nucleus of thalamus on morphine-induced antinociception in a rat model of acute trigeminal pain

The parafascicular nucleus (PFN) of thalamus, as a supraspinal structure, has an important role in processing of nociceptive information. In addition, μ-opioid receptor contributes to supraspinal modulation of nociception. In the present study, the effects of microinjection of naloxone (a non-specific opioid-receptor antagonist) and naloxonazine (a specific μ-opioid receptor antagonist) were in...

A Modified Character Segmentation Algorithm for Farsi Printed Text Using Upper Contour Labelling

In this paper, a modified segmentation algorithm for printed Farsi words is presented. This algorithm is based on a previous work by Azmi that uses the conditional labeling of the upper contour to find the segmentation points. The main objective is to improve the segmentation results for low quality prints. To achieve this, various modifications on local baseline detection, contour labeling an...
